Folk-dance tasting menu

November 16-17, 2019

We had a wonderful time together, traveling through the music of Eastern Europe, Argentina, the Andes, and the American West. We were delighted by rhythms new and familiar including a fabulous world premiere commission by Julien Labro; a daring contemporary work by Gabriela Lena Frank featuring artistry from INCA, The Peruvian Ensemble; and favorites from Bartok, Piazzolla, and Copland.

Indigenous dance and song

Members of INCA, The Peruvian Ensemble delighted us with traditional dance and melodies from South America’s Andes mountains. They put folk art on clear display while the orchestra performed Gabriela Lena Frank’s Leyendas: An Andean Walkabout. We were truly impressed with the sensation of traveling from village to village in traditional – and contemporary – form

Nuevo tango and a world premiere

The exotic beauty of bandoneón and guitar shined, as Julien Labro and Jason Vieaux shared Piazzolla’s nuevo tango masterpiece, The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, and Labro’s world-premiere double concerto, Canvas. We can’t decide which we enjoyed more!

Intermission Insights and Entr’acte

After the first half, we had the pleasure of learning about the music that moved us as well as the remarkable bandoneón from the master of the instrument himself. Just before intermission ended, Jason Vieaux treated us to an intimate – and virtuosic – solo performance of movements from Frank Martin’s Quatre Pieces Breves.

Hoedown finale with student musicians

Finally, the New West Symphony was joined by student musicians from local high schools for a rip-roaring and heartwarming end to the evening! Yes, there were yeehaws from the audience. We wouldn’t have it any other way.
