At our Dec. 7 & 8 Winter Spectacular concerts, New West Symphony will present the Oscar-nominated animated short film, The Snowman, with orchestra.
Originally published in 1978, The Snowman, created and illustrated by Raymond Briggs, has become one of the world’s most popular children’s books, selling in excess of 8.5 million copies worldwide and translated into over 15 languages.
In keeping with the book, the film of The Snowman is wordless and free of dialogue, except for the now iconic, “Walking in the Air,” which is part of a now timeless musical score, composed by Howard Blake.

This weekend, the New West Symphony will perform Jessie Montgomery's "Rounds," which received the 2024 GRAMMY for Best Contemporary Classical Composition.
Rounds for solo piano and string orchestra is inspired by the imagery and themes from T.S. Eliot’s epic poem, Four Quartets. Early in the first poem, Burnt Norton, are these evocative lines:
At the still point of the turning world. Neither flesh nor fleshless;
Neither from nor towards; at the still point, there the dance is,
But neither arrest nor movement. And do not call it fixity,
Where past and future are gathered. Neither movement from nor towards,
Neither ascent nor decline. Except for the point, the still point,
There would be no dance, and there is only the dance.
Hear Rounds live, performed by pianist Lara Downes, on Nov. 2 in Thousand Oaks and Nov. 3 in Camarillo.

We're thrilled to see NWS Concertmaster Alyssa Park featured in the November issue of Ventana Monthly! Mike Nelson interviewed Alyssa and wrote "Kindred Spirits: New West Symphony’s Alyssa Park shares an enduring bond with her instrument."
Earlier this month, she was a featured soloist with the orchestra, performing “Amalgamatian,” a world premiere violin concerto written for her by Los Angeles-based composer Derrick Skye.
Beginning her 10th year with NWS, part of her enjoyment comes from the Symphony’s involvement with its community and schools. She has been involved in many children’s concerts, calling them “one of the most important things that the orchestra does. This is my favorite way to connect with the community.”
