1924: At the request (or insistence) of conductor-bandleader Paul Whiteman, George Gershwin begins work on “Rhapsody in Blue” for Whiteman’s concert entitled “An Experiment in Modern Music” at Aeolian Hall, Manhattan. Just five weeks later (Feb. 12), the completed work --- orchestrated by Ferde Grofe --- premieres, with audiences enthralled and critical response divided. Nearly a century later, “Rhapsody” endures as a major composition that defined the Jazz Age.

1955: Contralto Marian Anderson becomes the first person of color to perform at New York’s Metropolitan Opera in Giuseppe Verdi’s “Un Ballo in Maschera,” in the role of Ulrica, the fortune teller. As the curtain rose for Act II, she later noted, “the audience applauded and applauded before I could sing a note." Six years later, Anderson would sing at President John F. Kennedy’s inauguration on Jan. 20, 1961.
