2024 Masterpiece Series
Brahms, Mendelssohn & Ravel…plus a World Premiere
Saturday, October 5, 2024 at 7 PM
Bank of America Performing Arts Center, Thousand Oaks
Sunday, October 6, 2024 at 3 PM
Rancho Campana Performing Arts Center, Camarillo
The 19th century was an incredible period of folk influence on classical music masters. Brahms, Mendelssohn and Ravel transformed their fascination with local traditions into unrivaled masterpieces. Pacific Festival Ballet dancers enchant as featured soloists for Brahms’ Hungarian Dances. Los Angeles-based composer Derrick Skye blends fun with global music influences for a world premiere work written for NWS Concertmaster Alyssa Park. Mendelssohn’s radiant “Italian Symphony” is the concert’s cornerstone work. New West Symphony kicks off its 30th anniversary celebrations with a special surprise, collaborating with 5-Star Theatricals, to mark the 60th anniversary of The Beatles’ arrival in the US.
Composer’s Note on Amalgamation World Premiere:
“Amalgamation is a violin concerto that blends Persian, Assyrian, Western classical, Jazz, and Blues influences into a single narrative. The piece invites listeners to explore their own unique experiences with cultural identities through music while also reflecting the journey of embracing and participating in a cultural musical identity that transcends one’s own ancestry.” ~Derrick Skye
For our October concerts, New West Symphony honors Adopt-a-Musician donors, Concertmaster Alyssa Park and 30-year New West Symphony orchestra members. We also celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the three resident companies sharing the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza venue: New West Symphony, Pacific Festival Ballet and 5-Star Theatricals.
